Why UPVC Locks Fail Differently From Traditional Locks
A traditional timber door with a mortice lock has a relatively simple mechanism: a bolt, a cylinder, and a keep. A UPVC multipoint locking mechanism is considerably more complex: a gearbox, multiple hooks, rollers, deadbolts, and shootbolts, all operated via a single handle and coordinated through a long internal mechanism strip. More components means more failure modes — and more ways for a door to become difficult, unreliable, or entirely non-functional.
The good news is that most UPVC lock failures follow predictable patterns. An experienced locksmith can usually diagnose the problem and repair or replace the specific component without touching the rest of the door.
The Five Most Common UPVC Lock Failures
1. Gearbox Failure
The gearbox is the core of the multipoint mechanism — it translates handle movement into the coordinated extension and retraction of all the locking points. Gearbox failure is the most common UPVC lock problem. Symptoms include: the handle turns but the door doesn't lock or unlock; the handle feels very stiff; the handle turns partway but won't go further. A gearbox replacement is typically a half-to-one-hour job for a locksmith who stocks common gearbox brands.
2. Dropped Door (Mechanism Misalignment)
UPVC doors hang on adjustable hinges. Over time, the door can drop — the hinges loosen or the sashes settle — causing the locking points to misalign with the keeps in the door frame. Symptoms: the door is hard to close, the handle won't lift fully, one or more bolts won't engage. In many cases this is a hinge adjustment job rather than a lock job, though the effects present identically.
3. Broken or Seized Handles and Spindles
The handle spindle — the square bar that connects the internal and external handles — can shear, strip, or seize. A broken spindle means one handle works but the other doesn't, or neither works. Replacement is straightforward and relatively inexpensive.
4. Broken Hook or Roller
Individual locking points — hooks, rollers, deadbolts — can break or become misaligned independently of the gearbox. The door may appear to lock but a specific point is non-functional, leaving a security gap. This may not be immediately apparent without testing each locking point.
5. Eurogroove or Mechanism Strip Failure
The long metal strip that runs the height of the door (the mechanism or gearcase strip) can corrode, deform, or develop cracks. This typically requires full mechanism replacement rather than a component repair.
What the MLA Says About UPVC Lock Work
"A locksmith can supply, fit, service, and repair door and window locks, including UPVC locks. For access, the locksmith assesses which approach will cause least damage to the lock and door."— Master Locksmiths Association, What Can a Locksmith Do?
When a Full Mechanism Replacement Is Needed
Individual component replacement is usually more cost-effective than a full mechanism replacement, but there are situations where full replacement makes more sense: severe corrosion across multiple components; an obsolete mechanism for which individual parts are no longer available; a mechanism that has failed multiple times and has reached end of life. A locksmith can advise on whether repair or replacement is the better long-term decision.
Mechanism brands vary considerably in quality. An insurance-specification mechanism with a recognised brand name and a 10-year guarantee is a significantly different product from a budget mechanism — worth discussing when a full replacement is being considered.
The Anti-Snap Cylinder Opportunity
Any UPVC lock repair visit is a sensible moment to assess the cylinder. If the door has a standard Euro cylinder (as most UPVC doors do), and it doesn't carry TS007 3-star anti-snap accreditation, upgrading at the same time as a mechanism repair adds relatively little to the overall cost and addresses the most common residential burglary method.
