Security After a Break-In Is Not Optional
The period immediately after a burglary is one of heightened risk. Burglars often return — either the same offender, or associates who have been told the property is accessible. If a door was forced or a lock was compromised, the property is not secure until the hardware is replaced. Your insurer will not settle a claim on a property that was left with compromised locks.
The first call after police have attended should be to a locksmith. Not a glazier, not a handyman — a locksmith, who can assess the complete security picture: the lock, the cylinder, the door frame, the keep, and any associated mechanisms that may have been damaged or simply revealed as inadequate by the break-in.
What Your Insurance Policy Requires
Most UK home insurance policies specify a minimum lock standard as a condition of cover. For timber doors, the standard is almost universally BS 3621 — a British Standard for mortice locks that tests resistance to common attack methods including drilling, picking, sawing, and manipulation. For UPVC and composite doors, policies typically require a TS007 3-star anti-snap Euro cylinder.
"Check whether your door locks meet BS3621, a British Standards Institute standard for locks tested against burglary methods such as drilling and picking. Look for the British Standard Kitemark engraved on the lock. These locks are often called 'Insurance Approved Locks.'"— Neighbourhood Watch / Our Watch, Key Home Protection
After a break-in, your insurer will ask for evidence of replacement. Keep the locksmith's receipt, any installation certificate they provide, and make a note of the lock brand and model. Some insurers will ask for photographs of the installed hardware.
What a Locksmith Should Assess After a Break-In
A lock replacement visit after a break-in is not simply a swap of one cylinder for another. A thorough locksmith will check:
- The door frame: Forced entry often damages the frame at the keep — the metal plate the bolt or latch strikes. A new lock in a damaged frame offers no security until the frame is repaired.
- The multipoint mechanism: On UPVC and composite doors, a forced entry can bend or break the internal mechanism. The cylinder may look undamaged while the mechanism is non-functional.
- Hinge integrity: Doors forced open can damage or loosen hinges. A door that closes but whose hinges have been compromised is a security risk.
- Window locks: Burglars sometimes use a window to gain initial access. An assessment of the whole property is worth requesting.
"An MLA locksmith can advise on upgrades, such as anti-snap locks or locks meeting the BS3621 British Standard, which may be needed for your insurance. Use an MLA-approved locksmith so the locks you get won't invalidate your home insurance."— Master Locksmiths Association, What Can a Locksmith Do?
Like-for-Like or Upgrade?
A break-in is the right moment to upgrade, not simply to restore. If your existing lock was a standard Euro cylinder that could have been snapped (the most common burglary method on UPVC doors), replacing it with the same standard cylinder leaves you equally vulnerable. The cost difference between a standard cylinder and a TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder is typically £20 to £40 — a small additional cost relative to the disruption of a second break-in.
Similarly, if a timber door's mortice lock was not to BS 3621 standard — which is common in older properties where the original Victorian or Edwardian locks were never updated — replacing it now with a compliant lock is both a security improvement and an insurance requirement. Many UK insurers will not accept a claim if the lock on the point of entry did not meet the policy's minimum standard at the time of the break-in.
Keeping Records
Your insurer will ask for a locksmith's receipt or invoice. Make sure it includes: the date of work, the property address, a description of what was replaced, the brand and model of the replacement lock(s), and the locksmith's company name and contact details. An MLA-approved locksmith will provide this as standard. Keep this documentation somewhere other than the property — an email to yourself is sufficient.
